Detroit Medical Center (DMC) CEO Joe Mullany announced, effective Monday, June 3, Herman B. Gray, MD, MBA will be promoted to Chief Executive Officer of Children’s Hospital of Michigan and Vice President of Pediatric Health Services for Vanguard Health Systems (VHS).
“I would like to personally congratulate Dr. Gray on his newly expanded role. His leadership and ability to form strategic partnerships has ensured that state-of-the-art care is close to home for Metro Detroit children. Dr. Gray has positioned Children’s Hospital of Michigan for the future,” said Joe Mullany.
In his new role, Gray will focus on the continued growth and development of pediatric specialty services for the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, including the hospital’s ambulatory care network and developing strategic partnerships with other health systems to provide advanced medical and surgical care for kids. Gray’s additional duties will include working closely with Vanguard Health System leaders on child health and academic-related enterprises. Gray will continue to serve as president of the Children’s Hospital of Michigan while the DMC/VHS conducts a national search for his replacement.
“Dr. Gray’s expertise in pediatric academic medicine coupled with his experience in developing strategic partnerships with community hospitals and physicians, and his work in ambulatory care network development ensures we are uniquely positioned to transform pediatric health care in a more far-reaching and meaningful way for children as the health care landscape continues to evolve in our state and country,” said Children’s Hospital of Michigan board chair Erica Gerson.
Under Gray’s leadership, since he became president in 2005, the Children’s Hospital of Michigan has added eight new pediatric outpatient specialty centers in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. In addition he established formal relationships with Hurley Hospital in Genesee County, St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital in Oakland County and has built a long-standing relationship with Henry Ford Health System with facilities throughout Southeast Michigan. These specialty centers and partnerships help to ensure state-of-the-art specialty care for children close to home. Also the Children’s Hospital of Michigan has consistently been recognized as one of the nation’s best hospitals for children by U.S.News & World Report and Parent Magazine.
As an officer and board member of the Children’s Hospital Association and an appointee to the national Medicaid and CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program) payment and access commission (MACPAC), Gray has also assured that the Children’s Hospital of Michigan continues to convey a respected voice in both the state and national conversation on health care reform and Medicaid-related matters so that children remain at the forefront of discussions about these critical issues.
