As the Democratic contest went on for all the contests, it was Senator Hillary Clinton of New York that ended up with the debt of $20 million; presumed Democratic nominee Senator Barack Obama of Illinois continues to raise funds. Obama even has raised more funds than presumed GOP nominee Senator John McCain of Arizona.
Many within the GOP fear the fundraising prowess of Obama. However, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) is still strapped for cash. The hosting committee for the Democratic National Convention risks being $15 million in the hole which makes logistics much more difficult.
The committee was asked to raise $40.6 million by Monday, June 16. So far, only $25 million has been raised. Taxpayers of Denver, Colorado, may end up having to pay the rest of the other $15 million is not raised by that date.
So far, it has the people of Denver fuming.
“I have people buttonholing me in coffee shops, corralling me along the 16th Street Mall, even stopping by my house asking how the city will be able to afford the convention if the fundraising efforts fall short,” Dennis Gallagher writes to Mayor John Hickenlooper. Gallagher is the city auditor for Denver.
Maybe the Obama campaign will put its own funds in. Before the contest was over, Obama and Clinton had both agreed to raise funds for the DNC at the same time. This could be a viable possibility as Obama continues to raise funds for his campaign. At the same time, the most integral parts of the DNC have been merged with the Obama campaign.
