TACLOBAN CITY Leyte, (PIA) – The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration in Eastern Visayas is set to bare the 2011 winners for the Model OFW Family of the Year Awards (MOFYA) in the regional awarding ceremonies which will be held on October 5 at the Patio Victoria, Baluarte, San Jose, in Tacloban City.
Of the eight (8) OFW families nominated, two will be declared as winners, one for the MOFYA land-based and the other one for the sea-based categories.
The nominees were screened by a panel of credible judges who are experts on the issue of migrant workers and Overseas Filipino Workers.
The two regional MOFYA winners will represent Eastern Visayas in the National Model OFW Family of the Year Award.
Aside from trophies and certificates of recognition, both winners will receive cash prizes from G-Cash, Cash book savings from BDO, and corporate freebies from the other major sponsors.
Invited to grace and give their respective messages in the Regional Awarding Rites are Leyte Governor Carlos L. Petilla and Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez.
The announcement and awarding of winners will be done by Director Forter Puguon of the Department of Labor and Employment Region 8.
The 2010 MOFYA Search, now on its seventh year, aims to give proper recognition to the OFWs and their families in honor of their sacrifices and contributions in providing better life for their families, their respective communities, and in helping the country’s economic development.
To qualify for the MOFYA, the family must be headed by an OFW, land or sea based, formerly or presently working abroad, with contract of employment, work permit and proof of OWWA membership.
The OFW must be a holder of a Philippine Passport and does not have an immigrant status. Nomination from overseas may be accepted provided that the family of the nominee is in the Philippines. The OFW may be married or single, and with four years work experience as OFW.
The OFW is known as a solid stable family in the locality, certification of family solidarity coming from the barangay or parish priest or church head. The OFW must be financially stable. Previous MOFYA nominees who did not win can still be nominated.
The criteria for selection are as follows; wholesome OFW Family 50%, civic community involvement of OFW or Family members 20%, success in OFW or family members education or profession 20% and success in managing family finances 10%. (PIA 8)
