Drass(Ladakh)J&K, June 14 (Scoop News) –June 14:- Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Dr. Farooq Abdullah has said that 20000 MW power will be generated from the solar energy in the State during next ten years. The possibilities will also be explored to produce more power from water and wind energy to minimise the huge expenditure being incurred on exploitation of conventional source of energy. The use of solar energy will help to maintain balance of environment.
Dr. Abdullah was addressing a public meeting here today.
The Chief Executive Councillor, Kargil, Kachoo Ahmed Ali Khan, Executive Councillor for Roads and Power, Ghulam Rasool Nagvi, Executive Councillor for Revenue and Agriculture, Haji Ghulam Ameer and District Officers were present on the occasion.
Dr. Farooq said that the people of Drass had to face tremendous hardships during 1999-Kargil war but they exemplified the real spirit of National Integrity and gained popularity at National and International levels. He said the area is world famous for its scenic beauty and attracts a large number of tourists across the globe which is important for improve their socio- economic standard. He appealed the people to keep their environment neat and clean. He asked the Guest House Owners and other hoteliers to provide better and comfortable boarding and lodging facilities to the visiting tourists to attract more tourists.
Earlier, the Union Minister chaired a meeting of the officers of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council and reviewed the pace of works under the New and Renewable Energy sector in the area. He was informed that as many as 11 Hydel Power Projects are under execution in the area which on completion will produce about 12 MWs power. He also said that Solar lights and Solar Power Plants are also being installed in 10 different villages of the Kargil district to meet the local requirements of the people.
The Minister instructed the concerned officers to exploit the natural resources to harness the power potential available in the area and exhorted to make judicious and proper use of funds earmarked for the specific projects. He called for time bound execution of various schemes so that the benefits of these could reach to the people in time. He further said that the people interested in installation of solar heating devices in their houses will be provided interest free loans from the banks.
