Srinagar, May 24 (Scoop News) – Dr. Talat Ahmad, Professor, Department of Geology, University of Delhi, who has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of the University of Kashmir, is expected to take charge of his new assignment early next week. It would be recalled that Professor Riyaz Punjabi, the present Vice Chancellor, had completed his tenure on 6thJanuary, 2011 and was, since then, awaiting the appointment of his successor.
The Governor, N. N. Vohra, who is also the Chancellor of the University of Kashmir, has in consultation with Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister (who is Pro-Chancellor of the University) appointed Dr. Talat Ahmad from among a panel of three persons recommended in early April 2011 by a Search Committee chaired by Dr. Abid Hussain, former Indian Ambassador to USA, and comprising Professor G. K. Chadha, CEO, South Asian University and former Vice Chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Prof. S. Seyed E. Hasnain, an eminent Scientist and, till recently, the Vice Chancellor, University of Hyderabad.
Dr. Talat Ahmad has the rather exceptional distinction of being a Fellow of all the Science Academies of the Country: the Indian National Science Academy (FNA), New Delhi; the Indian Academy of Sciences, (FASc); and the National Academy of Sciences, (FNASc).
Dr. Ahmad did his Masters in Geology from the Aligarh Muslim University, M. Phil (in Ore Petrology-Geochemistry) and Doctorate (in the field of Igneous Petrology-Geochemistry) from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Dr. Ahmad has also been a Post Doctoral Fellow with three foreign Universities viz. University of Leicester, UK, under the Government of India Fellowship; University of Cambridge under NERC Fellowship and the Nagoya University, Japan.
Dr. Ahmad began his career as a Jr. Geologist with the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and, subsequently, worked at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehra Dun, as a Scientist for over nineteen years (1984-2003). He has been serving as Professor at the Department of Geology, University of Delhi, since October 2003.
Dr. Ahmad is the recipient of many prestigious national and international awards and honours. Among others, he is a Honorary Research Associate of the Department of Geology, University of Leicester, UK; Associate Member, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology Society; Member, Expert Panel for the Science and Engineering Research Council, “Deep Continental Studies Programme” of the Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi; Member, Board of Research Studies for the Faculty of Sciences, Department of Geology and Geophysics, University of Kashmir; Regional Coordinator, International Geological Correlation Programme, Member, Working Group for Geology for the National Science Digital Library Under the National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources, CSIR; and Member, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) UGC.
Dr. Ahmad has been presently working on the various sponsored projects, including Geochemical, Isotopic and Geochronological characterization of Granotoids from the Central Indian Tectonic Zones (CITZ) and Central Indian Shear Zones (CISZ)-Constraints on Pre-cambrian Crystal Evolution, funded by Indo-Russian, ILTP Project, and Proterozoic mafic magmatism in the Central Indian Tectonic Zone (CITZ): elemental and isotopic constraints on crystal evolution and geodynamics.
Prof. Ahmad has over 60 research publications to his credit. He has supervised several M. Phil and Ph. D. research studies at the University of Delhi and the Research School of Earth Sciences, Australian National University, Canberra, Australia.
