Drinking Homemade Brew Causes 60 Deaths In Kenya

ABC News has reported that at least 60 people have died in four counties in Kenya after they consumed homemade brew which was believed to be laced with industrial alcohol, according to a Kenya police report.

The deaths were reported in the counties of Embu, Kiambu, Muranga and Kitui, according to Inspector General of Police David Kimalyo; and he believes the people had accessed the same batch of homemade brew containing methanol, a toxic alcohol is added to the concoction to give it more of a kick.

Kimaiyo said, “The deaths were first reported on Sunday night.” The consumption of homemade liquor is high in Kenya; this is where more than half of the population lives below the poverty line and they cannot afford to buy standardized alcohol. Deaths are occasionally occurring there from the consumption of the illicit brew when unscrupulous traders lace the drink with methanol.
