Deniz Som, a writer for the daily newspaper Cumhuriyet,
along with approximately 300 people protested the Üsküdar
Municipality by drinking on the shore of the Bosphorus on the Asian
side of the city. The Islamist-leaning Üsküdar
municipal government has been fining people for drinking in
public and putting their names on their public
website. During the protest Som and his fellow demonstrators drank wine, beer and vodka which caused one man
to shout at and attack Som by punching him in
the arm and shouting “drunken bastards” at the crowd.
