DUJ appeals to Delhi CM

New Delhi, March 12 (Scoop News) –The Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ) today appealed to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to intervene on behalf of arrested journalist M. A. Kazmi. The DUJ said that prolonged custodial interrogation by the Police should be stopped as he is cooperating in investigation of the bomb attack on an Israeli diplomat last month.  DUJ warned against torture of the journalist who has a long, clean record of professional activity.

In a memorandum today the DUJ asked that the charges framed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act be withdrawn until investigations are completed. Lastly DUJ asked that in case the Police has foolproof evidence against Kazmi, a charge sheet should be filed without delay, so that he may apply for bail.

Prominent academics associated with SAHMAT also issued a statement in support of DUJ’s stand. They condemned the Police’s attempts to muzzle the Press in Delhi through the arrest of M.A. Kazmi and the attempt to raid the home of Dr. John Cherian, bureau chief of Frontline magazine. They demanded justice for Kazmi and action against the police personnel involved in the John Cherian case. The intellectuals who signed the protest include Ram Rahman, M.K.Raina, Prof. Prabhat Patnaik, Prof. D.N.Jha and Prof. C.P. Chandrasekhar.
