New Delhi, September 19 (Scoop News)-The Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ), and the Delhi Press Unity Centre 2013 condemns the Andhra Pradesh police for its attempts to browbeat the AP Resident Editor of The Hindu and some other news channels for carrying reports on a controversial meeting the AP DG of Police Dinesh Reddy had with a so-called Godman.
In a joint statement today, DUJ president Sujata Madhok and DUJ General Secretary S.K.Pande have called for immediate action, failing which the two bodies would be compelled to observe black day in the capital followed by other forms of action, against increased press bashing and harassment of journalists by the police, the government or anti-social elements whether it be in Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, U.P or any part of the country.
In the case of Andhra, the DUJ fully supports the increasing unity reflected there. Welcoming the statement by the Indian Journalists Union (IJU) it has called for suo moto action by the Press Council. It also opined that the Press Council should also oversee the situation in Muzzafarnagar from the point of restrained reporting and protection to journalists in a potentially hazardous situation where peace and restraint was needed. The press has a special role and duty in conflict situations the DUJ added.
