New Delhi/Jammu,September 11 (Scoop News)- The Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ) has called for the immediate release of Cartoonist Aseem Trivedi and withdrawal of the charges against him, failing which it will be observing protest day on Thursday 13th September.
It has further called upon the Government to immediately have a fresh look at the outdated law on sedition to ensure that journalists, writers and cartoonists are not made guinea pigs of vested interests whether they are at the state or at the Centre.
In a joint press statement today the DUJ president Sujata Madhok and General Secretary S.K.Pande said that it was high time that the dubious use of sedition laws to muzzle and silence dissent that have a long history going back to British laws – specially the misuse of the so called reasonable restrictions clause on free speech was changed.
A special stock taking meeting of the Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ), slated for Wednesday, (tomorrow) would look into continued attacks on the press, increasing dangers to the journalists and journalism and the Working Journalists Act and certain aspects of the jailed journalist Kazmi case,.
The DUJ also took note of continuous press bashing visible in various states from Maharashtra, West Bengal to Gujarat. It noted that even in Indore the case against Harish Yadav, a Cartoonist with Prabhat kiran , who was arrested last year for a drawing of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, is still pending in courts though he was released on bail.
