DUJ to file revision petition

New Delhi, September 16 (Scoop News)- The Delhi Union of Journalists in a statement today has said the Supreme Court Verdict laying down constitutional principles for postponement of reporting of sub-judice matter could in cases prove a weapon in favour of the powerful interests against the powerless.

In a joint statement today the DUJ President Sujata Madhok, Vice President Dineshchandra and General Secretary S K Pande have opined that the doctrine of “postponement of reporting” as propounded by the  Supreme Court could more often be abused by the powerful and the corrupt to suppress the voice of innocent victims and could more often than not be anti-people.

The DUJ cautioned that the doctrine of postponement of publications of hearings is fraught with grave dangers to the “societal interest”, which the apex court purportedly is trying to protect.

The DUJ opines that there are instances galore where it is the media which has prevented miscarriage of justice e.g. exposure of the nexus between prosecution and defence in BMW case/Jessica Lal murder case.

An emergency meeting of the Executive Committee is being called tomorrow to discuss the possibilities of filing a revision petition. Social & human rights lawyer Ashok Agarwal will be filing the petition on behalf of the DUJ.
