The Tamil Nadu State Tourism Department has planned to introduce a unique, ‘earn while learning’ programme for their benefit.
Students pursuing tourism courses in the city colleges can earn extra pocket money when their colleges reopen this month.
Earn while learning programme which will be launched for the first time will see the students manning tourist information centres at select places and also at few important temples.They would also be involved in selling TTDC’s package tour tickets.
The principals and HODs who attended a meeting of the TTDC agreed to this concept.
The students would be provided training to manage tourists.
A TTDC official says that it is a unique experience for students as they would not onlyget the opportunity to learn the nuances of their profession but also earn a substantial sum while still in college.
Intially the students would man the tourist information centers at Central and Egmore railway stations and the Koyambedu bus terminal in Chennai.They would get an incentive of 10 % from the sale of tickets.
Services of students from each college would be utilized on a rotation basis to ensure all the colleges offering tourist courses were covered.
The scheme would be extended to other centers depending on the success of the scheme.
Information centers are to be established shortly at Kapaleeswarar temple, Parthasarathy temple and Kaligambal temple would also be handed over to the students.
The proposed scheme to be introduced by the TTDC, is a welcome measure that may help the students community not only to learn the nuances of their profession but also earn from the word go in the course of their education, perhaps on the western model and also make them self-reliant.
