As you know, HKUST (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) has pledged to support World Wide Fund For Nature Hong Kong’s "Earth Hour, 2009" campaign. Tonight, between 8:30 and 9:30 pm, non-essential lights on campus will be switched off in line with this global social movement to raise public awareness to combat climate change.
It has been arranged to turn off non-essential lights in the public areas of our campus. My university has worked with our banks and caterers to turn off bill boards and light boxes, and has managed the usage of sports facilities accordingly to facilitate lights off. Fellow students in various residential halls will participate as well. Many apartments of our university are helping with promotional arrangements.
By joining this movement, individuals can show that each of us has the power in making a difference towards tackling climate change. This is also an opportunity to register with the global community that Hong Kong people care about climate change and we would very much want to be a part of the solution.
In this connection, wherever you are tonight, between 8:30 and 9:30 pm, do take part in this meaningful movement by switching off lights. And remember supporting Earth Hour 2009 after tonight by:
– turning off your room lights or office lights as far as possible;
– reducing use of lighting in public area; and
– always turning off lighting before leaving.
