The hefty stash of documents former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden seized and exposed to outsiders will take two years of study and billions of dollars to overcome the loss of security to military operations and tactics, according to a top U.S. military officer.
Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey informed the House Armed Services Committee that the Pentagon had set up a task force to determine how the documents might possibly be used and how to mitigate the problem. He also stated the “magnitude of this challenge” could take the task force as long as two years to complete.
The massive majority of documents that were taken by Snowden related to U.S. military capabilities and less than 10 percent embroiled domestic surveillance programs that were discussed more widely, according to U.S. officials.
