Elections for urban self-governing institutions of West Bengal will be held on May 30. People themselves exercise the local affairs either directly or through their elected representatives.The Corporation and the Municipalities are recognised as the Urban self-governing institutions.The Calcutta Corporation has been constituted and regulated by the Calcutta Municipal Act 1980.The Calcutta Municipal (Amendment) Act says the Councillors of the Corporation are elected on the basis of univarsal adult franchise.Calcutta has been divided into 141 wards.One councillor is elected for each ward.The mayor is elected by the councillors for five years.The Mayor-in-Council consists of the Mayor,the Deputy Mayorand ten councillors.
