Considering the steep hike in the crude oil price in the global market touching $ 100 a barrel, the Automobile Industry is trying to catch up and eyeing with the vehicles run with electricity and it will meet three fourth of its crude oil requirements.
A recent survey undertaken by AC Neilsen has pointed out that the scope for E-Bikes and E-scooters is bright and roughly 2 lakh unit of them is estimated to sell in the year 2007-2008.Taking the lead is the YO bikes series promoted by Indus.According to Mukesh Bhandari, Chairman and Managing Director of Electrotherm, with his mission ‘say no petrol’has managed to sell more than 40,000 units of E-bikes across the market during the year 2007.But the idea is yet to catch up.
Indus has two variant of electric bykes christened ‘Yosmart’ with a price range of 27,500/- while ‘Yospeed’cost Rs 8,000/-more.From the consumers point of view under the Indian Motor Vehicles laws,’Yosmart’bikes that runs a top speed of 25 kilometers do not require any registration and license.Besides no maintenance cost is involved.While the cost of running the vehicle on petrol is Rs 1.25 per Km, it is 0.08 paise in the case of E-bikes.
Hero Ultra, a venture between Hero exports, an affiliate of Hero cycles showcased seven E-bikes in the price range of Rs 14,300 to 36,500.
