Eli Broad, a billionaire Real Estate magnate and financier, donated another $400 million to the Broad Institute for gene research at Harvard and MIT today.
Along with his wife, Edythe, Eli Broad started the Broad Institute with $100 million in 2004 to study the genetic roots of mental illness and cancer. He gave another $100 million a year later and has been very pleased with the results: 350 scientific papers, new clinical trials and progress in understanding how genes might cause mental illness and cancer.
"Of all our philanthropy, the Broad Institute has been the investment that has yielded the greatest returns," Eli Broad said. With today’s $400 million donation, Eli Broad guarantees that the Broad Institute will continue its breakthrough research for years to come.
