Pakistani authorities have ordered distribution of 30,000 assault rifles among villagers and approved a plan to raise an elite police force to counter growing militancy and extremism in North West frontier Province (NWFP), . The objective of the plan is to combat growing militancy and restore the government’s order. A plan has been approved to recruit 2,500 personnel for the elite police force. The move comes days after government reached an agreement with religious hardliners to enforce Shariah or Islamic laws in the restive Swat valley, most of which is controlled by the local Taliban.
