Baguio City – The lack of tourist spots in the Philippines did not prevented Koreans to travel to the country most especially the City of Pines. The primary reason is conspicuously attributed to education wherein the Koreans constantly seek the English language proficiency study. English schools, private tutorials and other educational institutions are fully booked with Korean students. Latest figures shows the number of Koreans studying in the City of Baguio have reached to its highest level since year 2000.
The competency of Filipino English teachers is one of the factors why the Koreans keep on coming to the Philippines. Also, like any other nationality, Koreans look not only for quality English education but for financial consideration. The Philippines offers the lowest rate in the English language study compared to other country like the US, Canada, UK, Australia and other English speaking countries that offers English proficiency study.
In addition, the Koreans love to stay in the City of Pines certainly because it has a cool climate just like in Korea. The ambiance gives oneself the solace and peace of mind while having English class. But of course there are some drawbacks in hosting the Koreans. Some of them were not complying with the standard rate of service fee being charged by English teachers. But all along, what matters most is the employment and English knowledge gained by the locals and the Koreans respectively. This “education tourism” as they call it, is now part of the city’s program to really encourage more Koreans to study the English language in a manner that it is affordable but quality intensive study.
