Lanús was the center of the football universe during Wednesday night´s match in the Buenos AIres suburb showing Estudiantes that they were the real deal to obtain their second international tournament. They came in to this match being undefeated against Argentine sides in international play at home.

Estudiantes wanted to take their first step towards winning their first international title in 37 years.

Lanús are another squad when they play in their own neighborhood. But as coach Ramón Cordero said, they need to be more focused on the 90 minutes as the team still has some lapses. This was part of the reason why they lost to Independiente this past weekend.

If this was the case, then Estudiantes should be fortunate that they have those lapses, because it could have been worse.

Estudiantes were the most ambitious team from the first whistle during the first half of the match. They looked to win the match as soon as possible, but Lanús´ compact style

In a span of five minutes, José Sand showed his value. After being a threat all throughout that time, Sand received a ball inside the box and was then fouled clearly to set up the penalry in the 17th minute.

Pelletieri did the honors but Andujar stopped the penalty, only to see Pelletieri pounce on the ball and open the scoreboard.

Five minutes later, Sand would receive another ball and this time he would put the shot off the near post and past a helpless Andujar.

To make matter worse, Juan Sebastián Verón had to leave the game due to an injury.

The second half, was intense but there was little precision on both sides. This was good for Estudiantes in some aspect as Lanús is one of the worst visiting sides in Argentina. helping them look forward to the return match on September 5th.

Besides sports both at the local level and internationally, I will be covering the Super Tuesday proceedings in Connecticut, which suddenly turned into a swing state here in New England. So check me out here as well as in my blog.
