Whether it’s your first or 25th time visiting Las Vegas, you’ll surely want to take in a show or two amidst the time you spend eating, gaming, clubbing, sunning and otherwise funning in Sin City. Thankfully, there are no shortage of shows suited for nearly all interests and inclinations—an impressively large number of those being performed at the V and Saxe Theaters located inside the Miracle Mile Shops at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino. Owned and operated by famed Las Vegas producer David Saxe since opening in 2004, these theaters have become a premier entertainment hub on the Strip—one reportedly hosting more shows than any other venue in town.
From musicals and big stage theater productions to comedy, hypnosis and mentalism, at these two theaters you’re sure to spot a show genre that suits your fancy—tickets for all conveniently offered by the V Theater Box Office. If you like to roll like, well, a high roller, opt for the VIP upgrade for the ability to print tickets at home and avoid will call while also assuring the best possible seating with line-free entry.
I had a chance to take in quite a few of the current David Saxe productions, and was amused, engaged and even astounded. Here are five of those shows I believe are sure to show you a great time:
V – The Ultimate Variety Show
With over ten years in the running and no two shows being exactly the same, this is a wonderful family-friendly show to see every time you’re in town. Having been voted The Best Variety Show in Las Vegas amid a lineup bursting with heart-stopping acrobatics, music, comedy, dancing and fascinating talents like contortionism, this show definitely has something everyone will enjoy. The show features hand selected acts from across the globe that are weaved together by an endearing and charismatic host reminiscent of the Vaudeville era, guiding the audience on a journey through all sorts of wild and crazy antics, including much of his own.
Zombie Burlesque
In keeping up with the times where zombies reign supreme, this risqué adults only show is a wonderfully campy mélange of the classic titillating Vegas burlesque show and an admittedly oxymoronic gaggle of “sexy zombies” who will have your heart pumping while theirs purportedly are not. Replete with silly and certainly irreverent hilarity, most of which courtesy of the hugely witty walking dead M.C., you’ll love the off-color humor, costuming, choreography, singing and other theatrical talents of this unique and innovative show. It’s a wildly entertaining spectacle that’ll leave you hungering for more.
Recycled Percussion
These America’s Got Talent finalists play live at the Saxe Theater (tickets sold through the V Theater Box Office) with over 5,000 shows to their credit! From buckets to ladders to classic kids’ toys, they make a joyful noise—and a lot of it. Unlike any percussion show you’ve ever seen, even guests get to grab a drumstick and their choice of pot or pan upon entry into the theater to jam along to one of the most energetic musical acts on the Strip. The whole family can revel in the silly randomness of the skits while marveling at the spectacular talent of these serious musicians.
The Mentalist
At this show you’ll experience mindreading and magic mixed in with comedic shtick. The result is a mind-blowing good time. Gerry McCambridge, The Mentalist himself, combines the skills of a detective with Merlin-like wizardry to dazzle and confound audiences with his apparent ability to read minds and perform what truly seems to be real magic. Come naysayers and skeptics one and all—a segment of the audience McCambridge embraces with open arms, invites into his act, and converts into believers one-by-one. At this show be prepared for shock, awe and amusement.
Las Vegas Live Comedy Club
This bold, in-your-face comedy show pushes boundaries to the delight of mature, not overly-sensitive audiences who can take a joke…sometimes with a jab. With a caliber of talent one would expect of a Las Vegas club, this show has a revolving lineup of top comedians from around the U.S. (some featured on SHOWTIME, HBO and Comedy Central) who ultimately warm the crowd up for the hysterical headliner, Edwin San Juan. His observational comedy-driven set draws on his personal life experiences as he explores, and exploits, cultural differences and idiosyncrasies of various races (including his own Philippine heritage), fatherhood, and absurd aspects of other real-life topics that are entirely relatable. Beware: belly laughs abound.
These are just some of the many shows offered at the V and Saxe Theaters where entertainment options runneth over. No matter the reason for your visit to Vegas—be it a business trip, family vacation, bachelor or bachelorette debauchery, or just an excuse to escape reality for a bit—any of these shows will captivate your senses and put a sustained smile on your face. In all, they offer a quintessential Las Vegas experience that’s a sure bet.
