Esmin Green was left for 24 hours in Kings County Hospital’s emergency waiting room for an inpatient bed to become available. During that time, she fell from the chair she was waiting in to the floor where she writhed in discomfort and died, all in the clear view of hospital employees who did not try to give her care until it was too late.
Esmin Green’s death was captured on a surveillance video that shows staff walking past her dead body as it lay in the emergency room’s waiting room. The hospital has made decisive action in response to the situation including firing the director of psychiatry, the head of security and the doctor on-call at the time of Esmin Green’s death.
This is not the first time Kings County Hospital has been criticized. Esmin Green’s video surfaced when it was shown in court during an unrelated case against the hospital.
