ETA, the terrorist Basque group, took credit for setting three more bombs on the spanish island of Mallorca.
The first bomb exploded approximately 2:40pm local time inside of La Rigoletta Restaurant. The bomb was hidden inside a backpack inside the restaurant’s ladies’ bathroom ceiling.
A second bomb was detonated at approximately 4:00pm local time about 500 meters away at a local bar called Enco.
A third bomb was detonated in an underground multi-level parking garage located under the Plaza Mayor at appoximately 6:00pm local time. The garage is part of a commercial shopping area.
No injuries resulted in the first two bombings as an anonomous call gave sufficient time to evacuate both buildings. In the first two attacks minor damage occurred to the businesses due to the small amounts of explosives used. It is still unknown if the third attack produced any injuries and the amount of possible damage. The restaurant and bar are in front of busy tourist beach areas. The anonomous call warned of several bombs planned to explode between 2:00pm and 6:00pm local time.
Police are investigating a supposed fourth bomb located in the garage of the Hotel Palacio Avenida near the touristic area of the Plaza de Espana and have evacuated two more local restaurants in the area after finding an abandoned back pack.
On July 30th, Mallorca suffered another bombing attack in which two Guardia Civil officers were killed when a bomb exploded as they were entering a police vehicle in front of a building used by the local police. On that same day another bomb was detonated by police a short distance away. Those attacks lead to a complete shutdown of the island’s sea and airways. In the northern spanish city of Burgos on July 29th an early morning car bombing in front of police barracks injured 65 people.
The attacks come on the heels of recent arrests of high ETA leaders by spanish and french government, and coinciding with the group’s 50th anniversary.
