This past Sunday our Pastor gave us a Sermon on “The Importance Of Mary”. He began by recalling Mary’s response to the Angel Gabriel;
LUKE: 1: 38; “And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it unto me according to thy word.”
He went on to draw a comparison between Eve, and Mary, calling Mary the “Second Eve”, just as we as Christians refer to Jesus as the “Second Adam”.
My mind started thinking about what he was saying, and it started to make sense. Had Eve not disobeyed God’s only commandment, and then conned her husband Adam into doing the same, we would not be at this time celebrating Christmas, for there would be no need for Jesus to be born, and Christmas Eve would also have little to no importance, as it does today.
Christmas the word itself is derived from Christ’s Mass. But there would be no Christ, and no Mass to celebrate were it not for the fact that our fore-mother Eve sinned. Eve’s sin of disobedience to Almighty God sets Christmas and consequently Easter, and the need for the birth and crucifixion and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
As Christians one might say that we sort of owe a debt of gratitude to Eve, for if it were not for her sinful disobedience, we would not be looking forward to Christmas Eve and the celebration of the arrival of Our Messiah the Son of God.
