Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Tuesday denied that her government was trying to shield anyone involved in the Aarushi murder case and said it cannot take action against the three transferred IPS officers of Meerut zone unless there is ”evidence against them”.
”There is a design behind the criticism of the government over the transfer of the three police officials. It is just to tarnish our image,” she told reporters here while lashing out at political opponents who have accused the BSP government of going soft in the case.
Mayawati assured to take action against the transferred officials – Meerut zone Inspector-General of Police Gurdarshan Singh, DIG P C Meena and Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida) Senior Superintendent of Police A Satish Ganesh – ”if the CBI gets evidence against them”.
”We will get them probed and initiate stern action,” she said.
She said the police officials were removed to ”ensure a proper and unbiased inquiry, but our political opponents are not desisting from issuing statements demanding legal action against them”.
Mayawati gave the transfer orders on Sunday, but Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowdhury on Monday said it was not ”sufficient” and that the Union Ministry was contemplating legal action against the three IPS officers.
