Ex-Minister prevented from travelling out of Ghana

A Minister of Information in the past Ghanaian government was yesterday June 14 prevented from boarding a British Airways flight on his way to the US with his family.

Officials of the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) – Ghana Prime investigative body stopped the minister Mr Asamoah Boateng when he was going through departure formalities on his way out of the country. He was told that he was being invited to  help  in investigations in to  some  contracts awarded  when he was  minister.

Most critics of the former minister believe that he knew he would be invited so he decided to run away.

He was heard on Radio later saying that the action of the BNI was an infringement on his human rights.

During ongoing investigations into the affairs of the past government, it came out that some contracts at the Ministry of Information were awarded to the in-law of the former minister during his days in office. This raises questions of conflict of interest. He has denied any wrong doing and even claim that he is not aware the company in question belongs to his in-law.

A current Deputy Minister said that the BNI heard that Mr Asamoah Boateng was leaving the country and so moved swiftly to prevent him from travelling.
