On Thursday (7Th Aug, 2014) Facebook Inc, the giant social network has acquired a network security firm, PrivateCore to strengthen the security of its system and help the customers to connect in a secure way. Let’s have an in-depth discussion about this matter through this article. Before getting into the discussion, let me tell about the online security company, PrivateCore.
PrivateCore – A secure server tech concern
PrivateCore is a software concern that enables private cloud computing by authenticating the OpenStack servers through its encryption technology and securing them from server threats like Rootkits, Cold boot attacks, hardware intimidation etc. This California-based cyber security startup was founded by VMware and Google security veterans in the year 2011. It helps the enterprises and internet service providers to act against illegal physical access and spiteful hardware by running all the applications with full memory encryption.
Reason for Acquiring
Facebook announced that it was acquiring PrivateCore to give better protection for its data servers and users in untrusted environments. Since this encryption startup has poured its great effort in creating a technology which can preserve the servers against unlawful access, it is greatly believed that this acquisition announcement would help in reaching the Facebook’s mission which is nothing but of making the world open and connected in a secure and trusted way. Moreover, due to NSA’s (National Security Agency) snooping scandals which threatened the cloud computing industry in United States, the Facebook might decide to enhance the security for its servers.
PrivateCore’s Technology and Product
PrivateCore is focusing to secure the data on X6 servers and it uses its vCage product that relies on virtualization & cryptography to sustain the sever integration and its data in use. vCage manager and vCage host are very efficient in safeguarding the private and public cloud accounts and thus it is safer to run any application in outsourced, hosted or cloud environments.
Final words
As breaches and malware attacks have become common, Facebook is buying a data security specialized firm, PrivateCore to fight against advanced persistent threats and thus protecting the people who use their service. Facebook is earning huge income through different advertising sources but it didn’t disclose any financial deal for this acquisition. Facebook’s Chief Security Officer, Joe Sullivan clarified that they plan to deploy the groundbreaking technology of PrivateCore into its server stack.
I assume that this huge social network has acquisition hunger as it recently bought WhatsApp, oculus and now PrivateCore. What is your thought for this tech news?
