Faithful, faithful, faithful, that is a word that is just thrown about in our society today. A lot of times it is used when talking about the relationship between a man and a woman…you know the she was not faithful to him or he was not faithful to her…it is so much nicer when you hear "I have never seen a more faithful husband or wife." It is used much less when people are talking about the church and God, but that is not necessarily a good thing.
Being faithful is something that is not always easy to be, and it is even harder to find another person that is faithful…but what is faithfulness? What does it mean to be faithful? Well, the Bible tells us exactly what it means to be faithful and true. Let’s take a look at Matthew 24:45.
"Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time?"
Here we can see that we are given one very important clue, but it is in the form of a question. One definition of a faithful person is somebody that is in the Lord’s service; that means serving the Lord, not sitting around and going to church once or twice on Sunday, a faithful servant of the Lord will get himself/herself involved in the Lords service and actually do something for Him.
"Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers, even though they are strangers to you." 3 John 5
Here we can see again a clue as to something that the faithful are supposed to do: help others! We need to stop going through life being selfish and thinking only of ourselves helping others is really a way to show the love of God and many times it opens up a door to tell the person that you are helping about the love of Jesus…now did you just get that?
Telling a person about Jesus, when you go out and help others, you do not just go and help all your brothers and sisters in Christ, you need to help the people that are strangers to you as well, we need to help those that are strangers to Christ and maybe through our faithfulness and the love and grace of God we will get he opportunity to tell that person about Christ. What if that person accepted Christ after you told him? To know that the simple act of helping another human being in need opened up the door for that person to be saved, that is truly wonderful!
"He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least in unjust also in much. If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches. And if ye hath not been faithful in that which is another mans, who shall give that which is your own?" Luke 12:10-12
Here we can see another aspect of our being faithful…it is called being faithful in the smallest things. As we go throughout life we will be given the chance (usually more then once) to show our faithfulness and trustworthiness in little things, insignificant things, as the Scripture clearly states above; if we cannot be faithful in that which is small how will we ever get trusted with the true riches?
Lets take a look at the faithfulness of the Lord, what are some of the aspects of His faithfulness.
"Your faithfulness continues throughout all generations; You established the earth, and it stands."
Psalm 119:90
Here we can see that the faithfulness of the Lord in everlasting, it was for ever and ever and it will be for ever and ever. "Nevertheless, my loving kindness will I not utterly take from him, not suffer my faithfulness to fail." Psalms 89:33
God has a faithfulness that is unfailing and that lasts forever, He will never leave us or forsake us and He only wants what is best for us and our lives…we could at least try to be a little more like Him in the things that we do…if we call ourselves Christians
