Farmers should be innovative everyday to produce enough food for their families and for food,Dr. Chinkhuntha has said.
Dr. Chinkhuntha, an award winning farmer who has revolutionised irrigatiion in Sub Saharan Africa said in an interview a farmer should always think of how to produce something better by use of innovation.
"While you can rely on innovations of extension workers a farmers should always think of user freindly methods that suits his farm to produce enough.
He said he decided to start irrigation farming although he had never enrolled at an agricultural college at any point in his life.
His irrigation methods manages to irrigate over 50 acres of land. Many agricultural enginners from many parts of the wolrd marvel at this irrigation methods.
He plants a variety of fruits, vegetables and over 2o different crops including herbs throughout the year.
"Parents send their children to school and advise their children saying if they fail they will be ordinary farmers.In this way children grow up having the feeling that farming is for people who have not gone to school," he said
He lamented that many people work hard in school to work in offices ,fearing to do agricultural work.
"We have many agricultural exeprts here in the world today.Do they have a field where to plant their crops?yet they are always busy with research.
He said the world now needs agriculturalists to venture in large scale farming to produce enough for everybody.
"Then we will not have problems of transporing food from very far to feed thousands who are starving somewhere," he commented.
