A little further on is the village of Saulkuchi. It is from Guwathati. This is the village where Assam’s famed silks -endi, mug and pat-are woven into some of the most exquisite fabrics. Practically every family in the village is engaged in this art. This cloth is made into the Assamese woman’s typical dress, the mekhla-chaddar, In fact it is unthinkable that an Assamese bride should wear anything but a mekhla-chadder, specialy designed and woven by some nimble fingers at Saulkuchi.
In addition to silk weaving,, this village produces master craftsmen of brass-ware too. The saris, Assam’s commonly recognized symbol of welcome, is fashioned in pure brass. And yet, surprisingly enough, the signs of materials prosperity are all but non-existent. Perhaps people here still work for love and not for money.
