Out of various interesting locations to visit in Las Vegas on a college field trip, the Chicken Ranch takes the entire cake. Since the name is called the Chicken Ranch, this location pretty much takes the entire bird. Forgive the lame pun. The Chicken Ranch is a legal brothel in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Yes, prostitution is legalized in Las Vegas. This is one of the many reasons that Las Vegas is known as Sin City. Interestingly enough, the Chicken Ranch could be derived from the slang term of “chicks” which means females. However, most of those that work at the Chicken Ranch did not want to talk to the students. But, it would be more than understandable.
But, two of the women that work at the Chicken Ranch volunteered to talk with the twelve students from Randolph College in Virginia. The two volunteers gave seminars and a course on American consumption.
Nicki Amouri is one of the dozen students that took a tour of the Chicken Ranch, which is located in the desert about 60 miles outside of Las Vegas. Randolph College is a private liberal arts college that had started to admit males within the last year. Until 2007, the college was a girls-only campus.
However, it is not uncommon for colleges to take field trips to brothels such as the Chicken Ranch. But the reception is mixed. There are those that hide away to avoid possible scrutiny and persecution while there are others that welcome the publicity. Those that hide fear the repercussions on what happens should family and friends find out about what they really do. So far, the majority of the girls at the Chicken Ranch refused to participate.
Debbie Rivenburgh, the general manager of the Chicken Ranch explains that they are very open towards educating the public. According to Julio Rodriguez, the director for the American Culture Program at Randolph College, the tour of the brothel was a perfect it as it encourages students to not just only study America. In a sense, it gives an aspect on the realism of America.
Despite the location of the field trip, it was very educational. One explains that the job allows her to take care of her mother and grandmother.
One known as Alexis said most of the women that work in this type of business are the breadwinners of the family.
When asked about male brothers, Rivenburgh said that Heidi Fleiss is trying such a move.
So far, the Chicken Ranch still gives a discount to those in the military.
To the students at Randolph College, the field trip proved to be very educational. One could say: “Best field trip ever!” But, a field trip to a place such as the Chicken Ranch is one that gives depth to the lives of such workers and why they are doing this. In short, it is a trip of understanding rather than demonizing.
