Kano State Commissioner for projects monitoring and evaluation, Ibrahim Garba, has warned contractors handling the renovation of the Sani Abacha and Kano Pillars Stadia in Kano, not to jeopardise the city’s chance of hosting the FIFA U-17 World Cup billed for October.
The commissioner, who gave the warning while inspecting the work, said the contractors must ensure that they complete the job before the next visit of the FIFA team in April.
Also, Garba disclosed that the state government had committed the sum of N870 million for the upgrading of the two stadia to international standards so that Kano could have a better chance of being selected as one of the hosts.
The commissioner added that already N400 million had been released to the contractors so that the projects could be completed ahead of the April FIFA delegation’s visit to assess sports facilities in the country.
He also directed the contractors not to disappoint the soccer-loving people and government of the state by executing shoddy job that would lead to the disqualification of Kano, saying that no contractor that sabotaged their efforts would be allowed to go scot-free in view of its huge investment and aspirations for the global fiesta.
He urged the contractors to immediately tabulate all extra works to be executed that were not in the original bill of quantity, and submit same to the government, for urgent measures to be taken.
While conducting the commissioner round the two projects sites, the Project Manager of Y. Technical Engineering Ltd, Fadeyi Olaniyi, assured that the work would be completed on schedule.
