While other countries are encouraging their citizens to become technologically innovative, the Philippines is going backward. I really don’t know what’s the logic behind why Filipino inventors just don’t get enough support from the government, much less the Department of Science and Technology.
If I remember it right, Engr. Dingle, the inventor of a gadget that will allow a car to run on water did not get much support but hassles from no less than the DOST officials who were supposed to boost his morale and efforts. Instead of supporting his invention, he got public humiliations. That’s the end of it all. No wonder why some of the Filipino inventors have to turn to other markets to sell their inventions, rather than the Philippines earning huge revenues from these high-tech inventions. Isn’t crazy?
I hope not. But this is how I interpret the actions of some government officials who couldn’t care less on the efforts of their fellow countrymen, who give prestige to the country through their inventions. But instead of getting recognition, they get humiliations.
If this is the kind of government system that we have in the Philippines, there is no doubt that more local inventors will be discouraged from pursuing their future plans to discover new things. It will be inculcated in their minds that nobody cares for them. So why bother, after all. If ever, they would rather sell these innovative inventions to foreign companies or government who may be interested in commercializing the invention.
Sometimes, I can’t help but ask myself if these government officials are in their right mind or not. If they are, they must have the proper demeanor to respect the feelings of others, rather than put them to shame or public ridicule.
