Three days ago or so when a news broke out about the forced deployment of a group of Filipino migrant workers to Iraq. The said workers were recruited to work in Dubai, but in their astonishment they ended up in Iraq and was told to work as a construction workers in one of the project being constructed through the sub contracting arm of a Kuwaiti Company. A lot of brouhaha started to fill the air in the very political atmosphere of the Philippine Republic.
A Philippine Senator immediately jumped on the issue and wants to investigate the matter posthaste. Given the circumstances where too many Filipinos are unemployed and nothing to grab about, working in foreign land is the only option for them to escape poverty in their country of despair. But in this case, where a group of Filipinos were said to be gypped by their Kuwaiti employer is really a mistake and should be corrected without condition or second thought.
Many Filipinos are willing to work in Iraq, including myself only when the said contract is above board and conditionally signed by both employer (i.e. American ) and the workers. Looking at the perception that the US is an old ally of the Philippines, it is only proper that both countries should help each other in rebuilding Iraq by using the resources of the two countries. In this case manpower is what the Philippines can provide, unfortunately the Philippine government is not really interested.
