BJP adopts different strategies for different states in India during the election campaigns. While ‘Hindutva’ remains BJP’s ultimate political ‘object,’its political ploys as well as ‘strategies’, vary in different states according to their political base, vote bank and on the literacy rate of the concerned state.
Before embarking upon the strategies adopted by BJP for the forthcoming assembly elections in Karnataka, we need to know the political background of the BJP party in Karnataka. BJP had considerable number of seats in the previous assembly, but not sufficient enough to form a government of its own. Hence, BJP had entered into an understanding with Janata Dal (S) in Karnataka, to support them to form a government for half of the tenure of the assembly and the Janata Dal (S) in turn had to support them for the rest of the tenure. But unfortunately this understanding did not work and so BJP’s Chief Minister Yeddiurappa had to resign without proving his majority on the floor of the assembly. BJP’s main rival Congress I has been reinvigourated by deputing the former chief minister S.M.Krishna back to the Karnataka state, to lead his party in the assembly election.
Under the circumstances mentioned above, BJP lacking in any charismatic personality in Karnataka to lead the party’s campaign in the forthcoming assembly elections has drafted and roped in film and charismatic personalities to woo the voters of Karnataka. BJP has requested the yesteryear star and their present Rajya Sabha member, former ‘dream girl’ to campaign in Karnataka. The former cricketor ‘Navjot Singh Siddhu’ is another personality sent by BJP to Karnataka for campaigning. BJP in its bid to capture power in Karnataka, aims in for a star-studded campaign, by deputing film actors like Shruti, Mahendar, Saikumar and Mukyamantri Chandru. In addition to film personalities, BJP leaders with charisma like L.K.Advani, Narendra Modi and Sushma Swaraj also planned to campaign in Karnataka. Above all BJP also plans to decentralise more powers to the BJP party cadres at the grass root level, in the selection of party candidates for the forthcoming assembly elections.
Let us wait and see what is peoples’ strategy towards BJP in the forthcoming assembly elections!
