Jammu,November 15 (Scoop News) The First Lady, s. Usha Vohra, today described the 21st century as the era of children and called upon the parents and teachers to inculcate the values of hard work, sincerity, dedication, honesty and truthfulness among the younger generation to equip them to effectively face their future responsibilities of nation building.
Addressing the Children’s Day function organized by the Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam Welfare Society, Rajiv Nagar, Narwal, at the Government College for Women, Gandhinagar here today, the First Lady impressed upon the children to put in hard work to achieve excellence in their lives. She added that nothing is impossible to achieve in life provided one sets the goal and then works hard to achieve it, with dedication and sincerity of purpose.
Paying homage to Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru on his birth anniversary, which is celebrated as Children’s Day, s. Vohra recalled the signal contribution of our first Prime Minister, both during the prolonged freedom struggle and, later, after Independence, in laying a firm foundation for the progress and prosperity of free India. She also dwelt on the missionary spirit and the self-less manner in which Pt. Nehru and other leaders worked selflessly to struggle for and attain freedom for the country. She stressed the vital need for reviving the erstwhile ethical values, honesty and spirit of service to the nation and systematically inculcating them among our children.
The First Lady lauded the good work done by the Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam Welfare Society in facilitating the education of the children belonging to the less-privileged sections of the society. She presented a cheque of Rs. 50,000 to the Society, on behalf of the Governor, N. N. Vohra, for carrying out its activities.
s. Vohra appreciated the captivating colourful cultural programme presented by about 100 children on the occasion, comprising folk and patriotic songs and dances, besides a Nookar Natak highlighting the need for eradication of social evils to establish a harmonious society.
The First Lady gave away prizes to the best adjudged students of a drawing competition organised by the Society last month, as well as to those who had excelled in academics. She also offered meals to the children, which had been arranged by the Society on the occasion.
Earlier, on arrival at the function, the First Lady was received by the functionaries of the Society, Principal of the College, Prof. Nalini Kohli and the students.
In her welcome address, the President, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam Welfare Society, Prof. Ved Kumari Ghai, threw light on the functioning of the Society during the past 23 years and its contribution in facilitating the education and training of children belonging to the less-privileged sections of the society.
The Joint Secretary of the Society, Ms. Ruby Sharma, presented a Vote of Thanks.
Miss Pinki, 8th class student, spoke about the contribution of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru in the development of the country.
The functionaries of the Society, teachers, and students in large numbers, were present on the occasion.
