In another two years, five Indian cities will be smoke-free, according to the government proposal to tackle the ill-effects of smoking.
So far Chandigarh is the only city to have officially declared itself as smoke-free and major cities like Delhi,Mumbai, Chennai and Ahamedabad are gearing up to ban puffing in public places.
According to a health official, ‘Delhi, Mumbai,Chennai and Ahmedabad will be smoke-free cities by 2010, when India will be hosting the Commonwealth games.We want to protect the people from the harmful effects of second-hand smoke.’

The government wants to ensure and strictly enforce that smoking is banned in public places as per Anti-tobacco law.
When people violate rule of smoking in public, we have to take recourse to legal action., sensitise the law enforcing agencies, come out with warning boards against smoking, and frame rules about pinning responsibility against an official in whose area public smoking is reported.
