Forced breach of canal flooded Suryavihar

JAMMU AND KASHMIR: Residents of Suryavihar in Patta Bhori at
Jammu outskirts came under water this afternoon when irrigation canal passing
through the area was set opened untimely without preparations. Unknown people
opened barriers of canal at Paloura which led huge water flow in canal and due
to garbage dumping entered into houses and shops of people causing damage to
their belongings.

 “We were sleeping
inside our room and abruptly hue and cry was out side regarding floods, the
movement I got up water has already flooded in my house through main gate, K. K
Suri a resident said. Water is being flown in the nearby canal by department in
prescribed limits after de-silting and cleaning garbage but nobody knows what
happened today as water flow was out of control, he said. Either it is
mistakenly flown out or it can be an accident as it is for the first time
floods have raided the houses in local during hot season.

Peasants of near by vicinity in acute need for irrigation
water for their crops raided the barrier at canal and the forced breach of
canal led to floating of locals in Suryavihar Coloney along with their
belongings. House and shops along the road side on the banks of canal were full
of garbage dumped in canal, eye witness said.

Incident took place at about 5pm and continued till 8pm and
finally with efforts by habitants’ situation was set right. People were furious
and shouted slogans against Irrigation Department for their irresponsible
approach. Locals informed that no one from administration or from the concerned
department reached the spot.

Chief Engineer, Irrigation, Ashwani Sharma was contacted
repeatedly for his comments but due to certain unknown engagements officer
could not pick the phone. Meanwhile, people in the area are angry are planning
to stage protest against department for their irresponsible approach.
