For the 2015 model year, the Ford F-150 is getting lots of new technology, in addition to a complete redesign inside and out. The big news this week is how well the new 2.7 liter EcoBoost V6 performed when towing, and how much using aluminum has helped in saving weight. Vehicles are expected to be shipping to Ford dealers late in the year, such as 5 Star Ford.
In addition to the traditional 5.0 liter V8 and the proven 3.5 liter EcoBoost V6, the 2015 F-150 is getting two new engines this year: a 2.7 liter EcoBoost V6 and a 3.5 liter base V6, which is replacing last year’s 3.7 liter V6. The new 2.7 liter engine has start-stop technology and is capable of towing up to 8,500 pounds with 325 horsepower and 375 lb.-ft. of torque – equivalent to a mid-range V8.
By using more advanced materials on the 2015 Ford F-150, engineers were able to lower the weight of the F-150 up to 700 pounds when compared to last year’s model. The use of military grade aluminum alloys in the body makes it stronger, lighter and more dent-resistant, and high-strength steel used in the frame makes it stiffer and saves even more weight.
In Ford’s testing, they found that the 2.7 liter EcoBoost powered F-150 was able to outperform the RAM 1500 with the 3.0 liter EcoDiesel V6 and the Chevrolet Silverado with the 5.3 liter V8 when towing a 7,000 pound trailer. The test took place at Davis Dam in Arizona, which has the same grade that the SAE uses for towing testing standards.
