As a result of the economic climate and turmoil that plagues the country into both fear and sadness, Simba Makoni, the former finance minister had announced his bid for the nation’s presidency. Makoni will be running as an independent candidate.
“[It is] is polarised nation in deep stress and one characterised by disease and extreme poverty,” Makoni explained. The country of Zimbabwe has the highest rate of inflation than anywhere in the world. The percentage of inflation is at a frightening four figures.
The elections for president are coming on March 29. Makoni explained that he would start a process of reconciliation if he wins Zimbabwe’s presidency. Instead of saying he would be against Robert Mugabe, the incumbent in office, Makoni had said to the members of Zimbabwe’s ruling party to join him if they want to renew the nation.
Earlier in the week, Mugabe had said that he will run and seek a sixth term of office as Zimbabwe’s president.
Recently, Makoni was expelled from the ruling Zanu-PF party. No longer a member of the Zanu-PF; Makoni made his presidential bid as an independent known when he launched his manifesto in the country’s capital of Harare.
So far, Mugabe has been blamed for many things wrong with Zimbabwe’s economy. The policies set by Mugabe’s administration have been blamed on the rate of inflation. However, Mugabe still remains defiant and dismisses all criticisms.
In a sense, it mirrors the message of US Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama of bring change.
