While fourteen people have been killed in the blast, about sixty-four people have been wounded in the car bomb attack. The attack happened at 1000 GMT in a square that was crowded with shoppers after Friday prayers.
All those that were killed were all civilians. At least one woman and one child were killed in the blast. Four hospitals are treating the wounded civilians according to a medical official.
Tayaran Square has been the location of bomb attacks in the last two and a half years. This is a predominantly Shia quarter of the city. As a result, it is a prime target of the Sunni extremists.
At the same time, five insurgents and fourteen suspects were detained by coalition forces according to the United States military. They say that violence has decreased by 60% but bombings are still common.
