Fragmented Frames is a carefully chronicled book compiled by Bhawana Somaaya with 93 short essays reflecting colours, trends, and social attitude observed during early days to the approving fan following of the great Indian film industry today.
It is an effort to put in perspective the gradual shift in attitude conveyed through essays on varied aspects of cinema ranging from mythology, theatre, television, superstition, children, marriage and mental-health to premier culture, literature, sex scandals, legendary controversies and more. There are intimate chronicles of love and heartbreaks of prominent film personalities and also illustrative features on personal and social tragedies.
The splendour of cinema is visible everywhere and it is difficult to escape its after-effects, be it fashion, dress, appearance or in presentation, unlike 100 years ago when no respectable person wanted to be a part of the film world: today, movies, Hindi films in particular, have a huge following. From stray features on news glaze pages on weekends a few years ago, it had entered the front-page headlines.
The book gives adequate space to film festivals like IFFI, Osians, MAMI, and Cannes. Besides Hindi films, there are glimpses of success stories down South Indian films and the new emerging multiplex culture. At times subjective, at times reflecting on larger issues, the book is a documentation of dramatic times, a salute to the fascinating medium of moving images.
