For attempting to kidnap one-hundred and three children from Chad, the Chadian court had sentenced all six workers to eight years of hard labor. The six charged were four men and two women from Zoe’s Ark, a charity based in France. They were met by French police after arriving at Le Bourget airport which is outside of Paris.
The French government had made a deal. They requested that the six aid workers serve their sentences in their home country of France. All six workers have insisted that they were trying to evacuate orphans from Darfur, Sudan. Sudan is currently a war torn region of Africa.
However, most of the children were from Chad with their parents still alive.
Albert Pahimi, Chad’s Justice Minister said: “I have responded favorably to the transfer request from France this morning.”
This was due to the bilateral co-operation accord made in 1976. The actions of the workers sparked outrage throughout the country. Still, France has a strong leverage over the country.
According to BBC, this is due to military support from France that prevented President Idriss Deby from being overthrown by the rebels.
