Low levels of radiation have been found in bluefin tuna off the California coast, 1 year after an earthquake rocked Japan. The earthquake caused a tsunami that destroyed vast parts of the Country and triggered a nuclear disaster. The explosions at the nuclear plant in Fukushima damaged the vessel containing the nuclear core. A fire at another vessel spewed large amounts of radioactive material into the air. More than 15,000 people were killed and parts of the country are contaminated.
Small amounts of cesium-137 and cesium-134 were detected in tuna near San Diego in August 2011.“ I wouldn’t tell anymore what’s not safe to eat. It’s become clear that some people feel that any amount of radioactivity, in their minds, is bad and they’d like to avoid it. But compared to what’s there naturally… and what’s established as safety limits, it’s not a large amount at all,”Daniel Madigan ( Stanford University Marine Station) explained in an interview.
Logan Kock ( V.P. of purchasing for Santa Monica Seafood ) told Adriene Hill ( Marketplace sustainability desk) that there is nothing you need to worry about. “Even for those of you who love your pricey sushi, this news shouldn’t put you off. The level of radiation the researchers found in the bluefin tuna is below safe- levels (established by the US government).
