In the Gaza Strip, the violence continues between Israeli forces and the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Hamas has been firing mortar rounds from Gaza onto Israeli soil. Because of the actions of Hamas, sanctions have been placed on the Gaza Strip. Israel demands Hamas to recognize and respect its statehood. But, Hamas refuses to recognize the state of Israel.
In regards to the US elections, presumed GOP nominee Senator John McCain of Arizona said that Hamas wants presumed Democratic nominee Senator Barack Obama of Illinois.
Recently in front of the AIPAC, Obama said that he firmly supports Israel. But Obama’s speech has drawn fire from both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority. Hamas accused Obama of being hostile towards Arabs and Muslims.
This recent act of violence has hindered a truce between Israel and Hamas which is being brokered by Egypt. The recent victims of the violence are a man and a 6-year-old girl. Ironically, this comes as Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority have called forth for talks with Hamas.
The 52-year-old man was killed when a paint factory was struck by Hamas’ shelling. In retaliation, the Israeli military executed an air strike. The Palestinians said that the missile missed the prime target of a group of militants. They said that the missile had hit a house and claimed the life of a 6-year-old girl.
