As the cities of Galveston and Houston hunker down to face the fury of Hurricane Ike, residents are using a number of online Web cameras, or webcams, to monitor the storm. See the webcams at weather.com and galveston.com.
Galveston.com offers a number of cameras broadcasting the view at places like Stewart Beach, the Historic Strand District and the sea wall. Weather.com has a number of webcams monitoring highways and coastal roadways. Viewers can easily see that some coastal roads are already blocked by feet of flood waters.
Webcams are also available for the city of Houston. You can view them at houstontranstar.org and the previous weather.com link.
Not only do the Web cameras offer insight into the storm for interested Web surfers, but rescue teams might be able to see a broken levees, stranded cars or people in distress on the Web cam.
