Garbage on sale? Sounds strange? But that will happen from now on. Citizens can generate as much garbage they want and the municipal authorities will sell it. Two power plants, estimated to cost Rs 72 and Rs 77 crore respectively, are coming up on the city outskirts. These power plants will need 700 metric tonnes of garbage each every day to produce power. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation will sell the garbage to the power producers. The power generated from these plants will be bought by Tata. The company is offering a better price to buy the waste in comparison to APTransco.
Sources in the Municipal Administration and Urban Development department said a high-level monitoring committee of the government has already given the green signal to set up a 11 MW plant at a cost of Rs 77-crore. The deal has been bagged by Venkateshwara Hydro Power Projects. The plant will come up in Manchal mandal. Three months ago the state had approved a similar waste-to-energy plant to be set up by RDF Power projects Private Limited at Bibinagar. Sources said two more power plants are in the pipeline
