In the search for the best pedicure, Yvonne Hair and Nails salon in Alexandria, Virginia says the answer is to let fish nibble away dead skin and calluses. Yvonne’s is one of the only salons to offer a garra rufa, or Doctor Fish, pedicure.
For $35, a brave client puts his or her feet into a tub and allows a tiny species of carp known as garra rufa to bite off dead skin and calluses, resulting in what clients say is the best pedicure they’ve ever had. The garra rufa treatment is originally from Turkey and has had success in Asian countries.
The salon lets about 100 of the tiny fish chomp away at the client’s dead skin and assure that they won’t go after live skin because they don’t have the teeth to rip it off. "It kind of feels like your foot’s a sleep," one client described the procedure. Another client said, "it’s a little ticklish, actually."
The fish don’t provide a complete pedicure; the salon gives clients a standard pedicure after the garra rufa have done the dirty work.
