SCHAUMBURG, Ill., January 22, 2014 – The Gateway for Cancer ResearchSM, a nonprofit organization that funds innovative cancer research all over the world, is pleased to welcome Teresa Hall Bartels as President.
Bartels is an accomplished strategic executive who brings a wealth of experience from the business and nonprofit sectors. Over the course of her career, Bartels has spearheaded numerous business development initiatives that have expanded the mission-reach for regional, national and international organizations.
“We are very excited to have a person of Teresa’s character and acumen lead Gateway,” said Bruce S. Lubin, Vice Chairman of the Board of Gateway for Cancer Research and President, Illinois Commercial & Specialty Banking, The Private Bank & Trust Co. “Gateway will look to Teresa to take its vision and mission to the next level in its goal of helping fund research for cancer cures.”
Since 1991, Gateway has funded more than 120 phase I and phase II cancer clinical trials that target, treat and attack cancer in bold new ways. Gateway-funded research studies are designed to impact lives through the development of safer and more effective cancer treatments. To make the greatest impact, Gateway commits 99 percent of all donations directly to cancer research that will help patients feel better, live longer or be cured.
“We are pleased to see Teresa take the helm of Gateway for Cancer Research,” said Gerard van Grinsven, President and CEO of Cancer Treatment Centers of America®, the organization that generously underwrites Gateway’s administrative expenses. “We wholeheartedly believe in the mission of Gateway and are dedicated to support this important effort in such a way that the majority of every dollar raised is contributed towards the cause of finding a cure for cancer.”
In her role as President, Bartels will spread Gateway’s message that innovation and true ingenuity in cancer research are needed if cures for cancer are to be discovered in this generation. She will also be instrumental in forging new partnerships with like-minded organizations and individuals, and fostering deeper relationships among the cancer research community both nationally and across the globe.
“I’m excited to join a team that is highly passionate and committed to do whatever is necessary to bring relevant and impactful treatments to cancer patients everywhere,” said Bartels, pointing out that Gateway is a unique cancer charity poised to make a real difference because it is patient-focused.
Bartels joins Gateway after 15 years at Hallbart Consulting where she advised nonprofit and business executives in achieving organizational excellence through leadership coaching, strategic planning and change management.
Bartels also served on the executive leadership team of United Way Worldwide where she formed a global coalition of United Way affiliates, now the world’s largest and most robust charitable network.
Bartels holds a master’s degree in organizational leadership from Dominican University in Illinois, and was awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters from Newman University in Kansas. She will continue her role as a member of the Board of Trustees for Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Midwestern Regional Medical Center and Newman University.
