It’s official. Geeks have taken over the entertainment world by storm. Even though geeks have been known to exist in certain movies, they always play the sidekick so to speak. Nowadays, geeks have made a comeback by appearing in major blockbuster movies such as Superman and Spiderman and not to mention award winning drama series like Ugly Betty and Grey’s Anatomy. There is no denying the fact that there is a growing fascination towards geeks.
Clark Kent has always been known to be the journalist who wore those goofy glasses, Peter Parker has the boy-next-door look who also wore glasses at times to hide his identity. Behind those glasses hides another side of geeks which women and men alike find interesting and a little mystery always keep people wanting more. Compared to the usual jocks whose good looks and charm has become the norm for Hollywood leading roles, geeks have a different side to them which makes their roles versatile. For example, in The O.C., Adam Brody who played the loveable geeky Seth Cohen has a bit of en edge to him. Not only is he funny and charming, he also has the brains to go with it. He’s unpredictable which makes his character fun and interesting.
Another example would be Christopher Gorham who starred in Ugly Betty as the likeable Henry Grubstick. It’s hard not to fall head over heals for this guy what with his gentle gaze and genuinely sweet personality. Betty couldn’t be able to resist him. This brings us to the part where women start to fall for the geeks.
Step aside Hercules type men out there, the lady’s have it in for the smarts rather then the looks because nowadays, nothing is more attractive then a guy who pays attention to your intelligence rather then your figure.
There is a reality show called Beauty and the Geek and it promotes the idea that geeks can be good partners in a relationship be it friendship or love. Geeks are not only smart, but they are also emotionally sensitive which makes them good listeners. In that reality show, most of the geeks are sensitive, kind, shy but most importantly, they show a willingness to change for the better.
There is of course, no absolute proof that all Jocks are bad boys and all Geeks are sensitive and nice. Sometimes it’s the complete opposite. However, in the entertainment industry, Geeks and Jocks are portrayed in that way. In reality, a mixture of both brains and brawn do exist and that is a good thing.
